New Beginnings
Every moment is a fresh beginning.

January first. I open my eyes, and the room is still dark. I turn to the other side, trying to go back to sleep. I shut my eyes, but my mind is wide awake, urging me to make the most of the first day of the year. Reluctantly, I get up and open the blinds, letting the soft light enter the room. Outside, the same tree is still standing, its bare branches outlined against a pale winter sky. The street below is quiet, almost suspended in time, as if the city itself is taking a breath. Apart from the silence, everything looks the same. I sight at the realization of sameness. It’s a new year, yet nothing has changed. Or has it?
As a bird flies past and lands on the bare branch outside my bedroom window, I’m suddenly struck by the fact that nothing is ever the same. I’m not the same person who went to bed last night. Everything is in constant motion, in a state of perpetual change.
We are born into a world in constant influx. Matter, nature, and ecosystems are continually evolving, moving towards entropy. Like a tiny seed that grows into a tall fig tree, our bodies and minds blossom from infancy to maturity. And just as the autumn leaves give way to the dormant tree covered in white snow, our bodies and minds lose their strength and sharpness in the winter of our lives. Nothing is permanent. To live is to change.
“To live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often.” — John Henry Newman
We can’t control the changes within us or around us, so we divide our existence into days, months, years, and decades. We create clocks and calendars to structure our lives and help us make sense of the constant transformation that surrounds us. We observe the cyclical patterns of nature and call them a year. And with every new year, we attach fresh hopes of renewal. We make New Year’s resolutions with hearts full of joy and optimism, even though we know many will be broken by March. We pop champagne and watch fireworks, searching for a fresh start. We review the year behind us and make promises for the year ahead, carrying with us the illusion of control.
Celebrating life, hoping for better days, and striving to be our best selves are all meaningful endeavors and essential for a life well-lived. As Socrates once said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Yet, we must remember that each day is a new beginning. Every morning, we are born anew, given the opportunity to grow. Each day brings a fresh start, and every moment requires a decision. Let’s approach each day of this year as if it were the first day of our lives. Let’s start each day with awe for the beauty around us, responsibility for the weight of our actions, and, above all, gratitude for the gift of life itself.

Let's do that! Beautiful as always, Carol!
